Originally written by Charles Wesley in 1739, this song has been widely adapted by music artists from every genre possible. It is considered one of the best Christmas songs till date.

In the original version the first two lines were 'hark! How all the welkin rings, Glory to the King of Kings'. In the present version it has been changed to 'Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King'. The best adapted version of this song till date is Blackmore's Night's version.


O Holy Night

Cantique de Noël or the O holy night is the brainchild of Adolphe C. Adam, composed in 1847. It was in French and was translated to English by John Sullivan Dwight. This song has the fame of being the first music to be played on radio. The first two lines are 'Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth.' The best adapted version is by Smokie Norful.

The First Noel

The fist noel is thought to be a translation of a French song, though not proved to that fact yet. It was first seen in the year 1833 in a collection of carols complied by William Sandys. The first two lines of the songs are as follows:

The First Noel, the Angels did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay

Silent Night

Silent night was first written in German by Josef Mohr in 1816. It was later translated in the year 1863 by John Young. First two lines of this famous carol are 'Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright'.

Away in a manger

Printed in a school book, this song dates back to 1885. It is erroneously thought that Martin Luther wrote the song. The music to this song was composed by William Kirkpatrick. 'Away in a manger, No crib for His bed' song has been sung best by Mahalia Jackson.
